4th Bfn PÄanel Discussion: ‘Nature Conservation and Solar Energy – Synergies in the Field?’

Solar energy is a key pillar of the energy transition. In recent months, a wide range of legislative changes have been adopted to accelerate expansion. Alongside rooftop installations, ground-mounted solar farms also play a key role in achieving the German government’s ambitious expansion targets (400 GW by 2040). The use of unsealed and undeveloped land in the open countryside is set to increase in future.
The conservation and promotion of biodiversity also require sufficient land area. In addition to numerous European and international commitments to protect, conserve and promote biodiversity, a further instrument – the EU Restoration Regulation – was adopted this year. The aim is to restore degraded ecosystems across at least 20 per cent of the EU’s land area by 2030.
As competition for land increases, it is becoming increasingly important to reconcile the various land uses as effectively as possible, to promote sensible dual uses and to achieve synergies.
The 4th BfN Panel Discussion on Nature Conservation and Renewable Energy will focus on approaches to reconciling the land requirements of nature conservation and solar energy.
