Land use and energy landscapes

The energy transition is changing our landscapes. The expansion of renewable energy and the associated land use have far-reaching implications for ecosystems, biodiversity and the landscape. Research helps to identify conflicts over land use and to establish standards for development that is compatible with nature.

Wind farms, solar parks, power lines and the cultivation of biomass for energy production are increasingly shaping the landscape in Germany. This brings with it changes for both people and nature: habitats and networks of biotopes are being lost or may be adversely affected. The landscape is increasingly being transformed by infrastructure for the use of renewable energy. It is therefore of great importance to take the various land-use requirements into account at an early stage and to make the most of existing synergies. 

With funding from the BMUKN, the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) supports research projects in the field of ‘nature conservation and renewable energy’ that investigate the cumulative impacts of the expansion of renewable energy on the landscape and land use. The following overview presents a selection of projects focusing on energy landscapes – ranging from scenarios and tools to the spatial development and distribution of renewable energy. The findings provide a vital foundation for forward-looking spatial development that is as environmentally sustainable as possible.
