The BfN is currently stepping up its activities to protect migratory birds in the North Sea and Baltic Sea and is seeking interested and qualified contractors for a new R&D project.
In order to avoid risks to bird migration in view of the offshore wind energy expansion targets, innovative protective measures need to be developed. The aim of the research project is to identify a bird migration forecasting system that is permanently suitable for use in Germany’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Based on research, exchanges with national and international experts on bird migration, and discussions with representatives of the authorities involved, a concept paper is to be prepared outlining the current state of science and technology, existing administrative hurdles, the key issue of site availability, and suitable radar or camera systems.
A follow-up project is intended to begin the practical implementation of a higher-level bird migration forecasting system in the German EEZ.
