Publication in “Energy, Sustainability and Society”

Energy, Sustainability and Society is a peer-reviewed open access journal published under SpringerOpen. The journal addresses topics ranging from scientific research and innovative approaches to technology implementation to analysis of the economic, social and environmental impacts of sustainable energy systems.

As part of the nature conservation research, the article Challenges of future energy landscapes in Germany — a nature conservation perspective, written by Jens Ponitka and Sarah Böttner, scientists at the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, was accepted and published in issue 10 as part of the article series "Energy landscapes of today and tomorrow". We are pleased that the article has been accepted and hope that all interested parties will enjoy reading and citing it.

The article follows an interdisciplinary approach and combines an administrative and a research perspective. First, the energy transition as a national transformation process and the challenges posed by the expansion of renewable energies with regard to nature conservation and landscape management are presented. The analysis of existing literature identifies key factors for a sustainable energy transition, e.g. availability of land, landscapes and impacts on species and habitats. Taking into account the aspects of nature conservation that are most affected from an administrative point of view, selected research projects are highlighted, future research needs are derived and possible approaches to strengthen the integration of nature conservation into the energy transition are discussed.

Further articles on this topic can be found in the  "landscapes" collection of articles and on other topics on the homepage of Energy, Sustainability and Society.
