Natur Conservation and Landscape Protection: GIS-supported wind energy scenarios

New BfN script published

Scenarios for the expansion of renewable energies from a nature conservation perspective

The task of the research project is to find solutions for how the negative consequences for nature and landscape associated with the energy transition can be better taken into account in political and planning decisions at a strategic level.

Accordingly, the project is working on the following key research topics:

  • Scenarios of RE expansion will first be developed from an energy-economy perspective. As scenarios, two alternative strategies for the expansion of onshore wind energy plants are used as a starting point: On the one hand, the use of the best (windy or efficient) locations and, on the other hand, generation close to the consumer (near-load) are used.

  • In the further course, the scenarios created are assessed with regard to their conflict risks with the interests of nature conservation and landscape protection. For this purpose, the scenarios are to be depicted in their spatial dimension or projected into space and the extent of the conflict risks with the respective nature conservation concerns (protected goods) is to be assessed. For this purpose, existing data on nature and landscape are used for the most part, but a separate method of assessment is developed for the landscape as a protected good. Perceptual-psychological studies are an important part of this method.

  • With the help of the findings, in particular the conflict risk assessment, the above-mentioned scenarios are then optimised with regard to nature conservation and landscape protection concerns. The effects of these optimisations can be shown on the basis of the remaining conflict risk. The individual scenarios are thus easily comparable with each other.
