Nature conservation aspects in the repowering of wind turbines topic of BfN departmental research

New call for proposals for an R&D project published (FKZ: 3520 86 0300)

The R&D project "Nature conservation aspects of repowering wind turbines; analysis of legal issues and practical examples" (FKZ 3520 86 0300) aims to provide information on the positive and negative impacts on nature and landscape that can be expected from repowering and how the requirements of nature conservation can be better taken into account. From a nature conservation perspective, repowering offers the opportunity, for example, to reassess the siting of individual turbines on the basis of current knowledge. Both the planning level (site selection and securing for repowering) and the approval practice (dealing with species protection aspects, compensation obligations from the impact regulation under nature conservation law, offsetting of compensation already carried out, enforcement and efficiency of nature conservation requirements and measures, etc.) must be considered. For this purpose, practical examples of different site constellations are to be carried out (e.g. federal states, turbine types, site requirements, distance criteria). If necessary, the need for action for future regulations (e.g. the Renewable Energy Sources Act EEG) at federal level is to be derived from this.
