Monitoring workshop in Leipzig

Monitoring the impacts of renewable energy use and grid expansion was the topic of an expert workshop in the BfN focus "Nature Conservation and Renewable Energy" on 28 November in Leipzig. The focus was on various monitoring approaches and their possible use in the planning and approval of plants and as an instrument for nationwide control.

The participants of the workshop are active in various projects of the BfN focus "Nature Conservation and Renewable Energies", in which monitoring approaches are used. For example, the projects integrate the results of studies into existing monitoring systems (e.g. bird monitoring or FFH monitoring) or develop completely new monitoring concepts, such as the "EE Monitor" in an ongoing project at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). The collisions of birds and bats with wind turbines are a particular focus. In order to reduce or avoid these, new solutions for planning and approval practice are to be identified and evaluated by means of suitable monitoring procedures.

During the workshop, reports were first given on the ongoing projects. This included, for example, a Germany-wide examination of the habitats of various native bird species and their possible impairment by already existing wind turbines. A derivation of indicators was also presented, which make the main conflicts between RE technologies and nature and landscape recognisable. In addition, a method was presented to evaluate the effectiveness of avoidance and mitigation measures under species protection law. The subsequent discussion focused on approaches, data and methods for monitoring stock changes and interactions.
