Nature conservation aspects in future regulations on renewable energies in the heat sector- R&D project tendered

The project aims to identify options for a future heat supply and to present possible levers and starting points for a nature-friendly design of the paths of action. Further calls for proposals in the thematic priority area are planned.

In order to achieve the climate protection goals, the heating sector must also be comprehensively restructured. For example, in its energy concept, the German government has set itself the goal of achieving a nearly climate-neutral building stock by 2050. The Energy Efficiency Strategy for Buildings shows ways to achieve this, based on a combination of the two essential cornerstones of efficiency and the use of renewable energies. The strategic and legal framework for this will be created in the coming years, for example with the Building Energy Act (GEG).

From the point of view of nature conservation, in addition to promoting increased efficiency, it is important to design the system of renewable energy supply in the heating sector in harmony with nature conservation goals as far as possible. The project is therefore intended to show the options for a future heat supply and to present possible "adjusting screws" and starting points for a nature-friendly design of the paths of action.

The following work packages are planned:

  1. Preparation of an overview of laws, subsidies, political objectives and actors
  2. Scenario analysis on the development of heating and cooling supply in Germany until 2050
  3. Efficiency measures and technologies for renewable heating and cooling and their impact on nature conservation and the landscape
  4. Systematic assessment of the factors influencing the development of the heating and cooling market
    1.  Assessment of the current and future legal framework on development paths of the heating and cooling transition with regard to the impact on nature conservation goals
    2.  Derivation of levers for an environmentally compatible development of renewable heat supply
  5. Derivation of recommendations for action
